There is a village of people and groups trying to help Lola Brake and her unborn baby remain together, but time is running out. Brake, who is mentally disabled, fled a bad situation in a group home and has been living on the street for most of her pregnancy. Now her due date is coming up just after Christmas and the Department of Social Services said she must have permanent housing to keep the baby.
The concept for St. Clare’s Home of Joyful Hope was brought to life by a group of families in Greenville. They spoke to Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone, who asked Catholic Charities to help with the planning. The bishop said it was the necessary thing to do to further the cause of the pro-life mission.
